Tamakwa Country Lodge is situated in the village of Rosetta in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands with dramatic views of the Drakensberg Mountains.

The Mooi River meanders along the boundary, encouraging a variety of bird and wildlife.

Hosts, Wendy & Adrian Wilson offer a choice of luxury self-catering or bed & breakfast accommodation, as well as the personal attention and high standards that have made their establishment a firm favourite with many a traveller.

Tamakwa offers a perfect setting for your think tank, workshop, Lekgotla, brainstorming session or board meeting. With professional service and comfortable setting, it is the ideal venue for creative thought processes.

Bergview cottage is suitable for 4 to 6 people. Lavender cottage is ideal for 2 to 4 people. Burberry is a romantic thatch cottage for 2 with a four-poster bed.

In addition, the Farmhouse provides four elegant units, two bed & breakfast and two self-catering. Each unit is uniquely decorated and presents stylish and comfortable country living at its best.

Enjoy our scrumptious breakfasts alfresco in the summer months, and in our cosy dining room in the winter months. 

Try your hand at tempting the wild brown or rainbow trout on the Mooi River.There are numerous other fly-fishing venues nearby.

A professional fishing guide can be arranged if required. We are one hour from the historical battlefields of the Zulu and Anglo Boer wars. There is an array of arts and crafts outlets on the nearby Midlands Meander.

Excellent restaurants on our doorstep. We are 50 minutes away from the Giants Castle Drakensberg Park and 20 minutes from the Kamberg reserve.

A variety of bird species can be spotted on the property.

Bed & Breakfast & Self Catering

We offer a choice of luxury bed and breakfast or self catering accommodation. All units are individually decorated by Wendy and offer fireplaces, electric blankets, DSTV, and in certain units, under floor heating. Rooms are serviced daily and have many special touches such as fresh flowers and complimentary sherry.  We offer great rewards for outdoor smoking, superb views, the twitter of birds, tranquility and a constant flow of clean and fresh air indoors. 

Burberry Cottage

Burberry, our romantic thatched Honeymoon cottage, is ideal for 2 persons on a bed & Breakfast basis. It has an elegant 4 poster bed, shower and toilet en-suite, log fireplace and a lovely patio area set in a picturesque garden.

 Bergview Cottage

Bergview cottage is tastefully decorated and is suitable for 6 persons. It is secluded and has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large lounge/dining area, a fully equipped kitchen and a log fireplace both in the lounge and in the main bedroom. It also has outstanding views of the Drakensberg Mountains.

Lavender Cottage

Lavender is a charming cottage which accommodates 4 guests. It consists of 2 bedrooms with an en-suite bathroom in each, lounge/dining area, log fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen and a large veranda with stunning views of Giant's Castle.

The old farmhouse Suite

The Old Farmhouse provides 4 elegant units, accommodating 2 persons in each. Each unit is uniquely decorated  and presents stylish and comfortable country living at its best. All units are en-suite with fireplaces and underfloor heating. Suites 3 and 4 have kitchenettes suitable for Self-catering.

Kamberg Nature Reserve, only a 25 minute drive away and the amazing San Rock Art caves are open to the public with guides available to take you up the mountain to see them. It is a fairly strenuous walk taking about 1.5 hours to the top. Before you depart on your hike you will watch a video presentation which gives an insight into the history of the Bushmen.

A 45 minute drive and you are at Giants Castle  in the heart of the Drakensberg   Mountains . Here you can also walk to San Rock Art caves. There are many other wonderful walks in the mountains with maps available.

A visit to the Highmoor Nature Reserve is a must, being only 25 minutes drive up the Kamberg Road and one of the few places in the Drakensberg that you can travel by road to the top of the little berg. Easy walks can be taken past trout dams with spectacular views of Giants Castle. Eland, mountain reedbuck, duiker and baboons are often spotted as well as bearded vultures and black eagles overhead.

The Hlatikulu Crane & Wetland Sanctuary is situated on the nationally important Hlatikulu wetland, bordering on the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park near Giant’s Castle and is about 1000 hectares in size.  In addition to the significant wetlands (of various types) the sanctuary also has indigenous afro-montane forest, stunning grasslands, and protea savannah. It is a rehabilitation and breeding centre for Southern African crane species and is listed as an internationally important birding area and a national site of conservation significance. The sanctuary also offers extensive walking trails with excellent birding and wildlife viewing.

 

A memorable experience in the Southern Drakensberg is a trip up one of the most spectacular passes on this part of the continent. Sani   Pass climbs to an altitude of 2874m and zig-zags upwards beneath towering cliffs, buttresses, waterfalls and unique flora and bird life. You can experience a visit to a Basotho mountain village. It will take you approximately 2 hours to get to Himeville either via the Loteni Road in Nottingham Road or via the R617 to Underberg via Exit 99 (Merrivale) off the N3. Tours depart daily from Himeville at 09h30 and return at 16h30. Passports are essential and lunch is available at the Sani Top Chalet.

 

The Fly Fishing and Birding Shop. Located in Nottingham Road, is one of the largest stockists of the finest flies and fishing equipment in the Midlands. They also provide many different services such as flyfishing clinics, equipment hire and guided fishing tours in various waters, including the majestic Bushmans   River . 

 

Why not try a Battlefield Tour ? Travel in comfort to famous battlefields and relive the dramatic past of this beautiful region with knowledgeable guide, Ron Gold. Anglo Boer War battlefields include famous names such as Spionkop, Ladysmith, Colenso, Vaalkrans and Willow Grange. Visits are also made to poignant Voortrekker-Zulu sites such as Blaaukrans, Rensberg’s Kop and Zaai Lager.

 

The Karkloof Canopy Tour is a unique eco-experience that takes people on a 3-hr adventure through the magnificent Karkloof indigenous forest. The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30m above the forest floor. The tour comprises seven platforms and eight slides that zig-zag down a pristine forested valley. The scenery and birdlife is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the tour.

 

Berg Trails offer a day trail on Appaloosa horses - usually lasting about 4 hours The trails will be guided by an experienced guide and horseman. There are breathtaking views and game such as, eland, reedbuck, bushbuck, duiker, jackal and wonderful bird life.

Directions

FROM JHB N3 turn off at the Mooi River Toll (extreme left lane). Cross right over the highway until T-Junction. Turn left onto R103 to Rosetta, Travel for 10km. Turn right onto the Kamberg Road at Rosetta. Travel for 2km, turn left at Tamakwa sign onto gravel driveway. FROM DBN N3 turn off at Nottingham Road off ramp. Turn right at the stop and travel towards Nottingham Road. Turn right under the railway bridge and travel through Nottingham Road Village. Continue on the R103 towards Rosetta, Turn left onto the Kamberg Road at Rosetta. Travel for 2km, and turn left at Tamakwa sign onto gravel driveway.
